In this, the first reading I did with Maggie, I performed alongside Broadway artists Helene Yorke, Hunter Bell, and Susan Blackwell (the first time I'd worked with the latter two since their "It Gets Better" video), as well as Maggie's siblings, Celia and Andrew. I am very grateful to two good friends who helped me out: Stephen Lance, who voiced for me while I signed, and Mandy Heinbaugh, who interpreted for me. We performed for and alongside homeless LGBT youth from the Green Chimneys shelter, which was a complete honor and inspiration to all of us.
This play was a lighthearted look at a high school student named Emma (Celia Keenan-Bolger) who is struggling to accept her queer identity. One day, her history class is suddenly upended by her fairy godmother, Kinsey Scale who - along with his crew of Historical Gays including Ellen Degenerate (Andrew Keenan-Bolger) and Audre Lorde-it-over (Hunter Bell) - give Emma a lesson in queer history that neither she or the teacher (Susan Blackwell) will ever forget.
